Tim Lincecum

I wrote the following about Tim Lincecum prior to his major league debut:
“Say what you will about the management in San Fran, but they have recently produced two future #1 ace level pitching prospects in Cain & Lincecum. To say that Tim has dominated AAA so far this season would be an understatement. In five starts, he has an ERA of 0.29, a opposing average of .119 and 46 SO in only 31 IP.”
In his two major league starts, Tim has been up and down. This is expected of any rookie. This Etopps card is unique and has one major factor going for it that I don’t think any Etopps card has. That is, it is really his first ever major league card. When doing a search of Ebay, all one finds is Lincecum cards of the Just Minor’s brand. No Topps, Bowman, Upper Deck, etc.
At a PR of 800, this card has an easy double written all over it. On top of that, the performance bonus (2pts) is attainable.
Recommendation: IPO as many as you can get your hands on.

Chase Utley
Cost: $7.00
PR: 749Â
One of baseball’s most exciting players, this will be Chase’s second Etopps card. The 2006 Utley Etopps “Rookie” currently hovers around $10 with a PR of 799. This offering is priced at $7 and has essentially the same PR. For the additional $3, I feel that it’s worth grabbing the “rookie”. On top of that, the performance bonus is rather high (.313 avg), so I wouldn’t recommend buying the card for the bonus. For that reason alone, I’d wait until this drops down to $5 or $6 in the secondary market.
Recommendation: Acquire in the secondary market.

John Maine
Cost: $7.00
PR: 799Â
From a practical standpoint, John Maine is a 26 year old pitcher with 13 career victories. His chances at becoming a HOF player are minimal at best. Yet, the NY media & fans love him, this is his first Etopps card, and the performance bonus of one point is certainly within reach. With a PR of 799, I think grabbing one or two isn’t the world’s worst bet. You may be able to cash in on a quick flip. On the other hand, if it does drop, I can’t anticipate it being by much. And the bonus point can off-set a dollar or two lose in valuation.
Recommendation: Roll the dice and buy one or two
Matt Holliday
Cost: $7.00
PR: 749
Holliday has emerged as one of baseball’s most productive sluggers. Check out his stats this season: .364 BA, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 1.038 OPS. A dynamo! Yet the hobby doesn’t seem to care. His only other Etopps offering was back in 2004, and with an astronomical print run of 2425 it currently holds a price of $2.16. Even with the much lower print run of this card, Holliday is simply a great player that the hobby isn’t infatuated with. For this reason, I’ll have to pass on this card.
Recommendation: Avoid

A great site - a great idea ! Keep it going. Another thought might be to include up/down estimates in terms of dollars. If you really knew that, you would probably not be doing this site, but would be on a island somewhere. But it could create interesting discussion. Again - great work !!
